Dash cam evidence on a Pattaya rental car return
A dated phone walk-around or permitted dash cam can help document condition and events. It does not determine liability or guarantee a dispute outcome.
On this page
Film a slow, dated walk-around while safely parked at pickup and return. A permitted dash cam records only its field of view and does not replace parked condition footage. Keep an unchanged second copy before handing back the keys.
A dated visual record can show visible condition and context at a particular time. It cannot by itself establish who caused damage, what a contract permits or how an operator, insurer, bank or authority will decide a dispute.
The short answer
Before fitting a camera, ask the operator where it may be mounted and how the car must be returned. Check that it records correctly while parked. Keep the separate pickup and return walk-arounds together with the contract and condition sheet.
What to capture
- All four corners, bumpers, mirrors, glass, wheels, roof (for low branches)
- Interior stains, dashboard warnings, fuel gauge
- Odometer and contract on camera
- Return: same angles in the same lot lighting if possible
Scooter renters should use the same discipline — see photograph your scooter.
Dash cam on long trips
A permitted forward-facing camera may record road context, but it does not prove the parked car’s full condition. Confirm installation and recording permission with the operator, keep the driver’s view unobstructed and make a separate walk-around while stopped.
Phone walk-around vs mounted dash cam
While parked, hold the phone steady, include a reliable time reference where practical and circle the car slowly at pickup and return. A mounted camera may miss wheels, bumpers and other areas outside its field of view, so use the car pickup checklist for the angle list.
Cloud backup before you return the keys
Keep original files until the deposit, card hold and any incident process are closed. A cloud copy or secure second copy can protect against device loss. If anyone asks you to delete a relevant record, preserve it and follow the applicable contract, privacy and dispute process.
Condo and mall basement returns
If the return area is dim, use available lighting without obstructing traffic, walk slowly and check the recording before leaving. Ask the operator to let both sides record the return condition before the car is moved.
If the record is disputed
If the operator disputes the record, ask for its evidence and the charge basis in writing. Preserve original files, stay calm, and use OCPB 1166 or complaint.ocpb.go.th for a consumer-contract complaint; use 1155 only for tourist assistance or translation. See dispute a charge.
Evidence-handling checklist
- Keep the original files; do not edit, crop or compress the only copy.
- Record pickup and return from comparable positions while safely parked and without blocking traffic.
- Capture the booking or vehicle identifier only as needed to connect the record to the rental.
- Avoid recording unrelated people, conversations or private spaces where they are not needed.
- Preserve filenames and time metadata, then make a separate secure backup.
- Keep the contract, condition sheet, messages, receipts and incident report with the media.
- Write a short chronology covering pickup, discovery of any issue, notification and return.
- Share records only with the operator, insurer, bank, adviser or authority as the applicable process requires.
A complete record does not decide fault or liability. It helps the relevant decision-maker identify the vehicle, timing, visible condition, communications and contractual steps without relying on a single isolated image.
