Local agency or international firm?
It is the first decision in Pattaya car rental, and there is no single right answer:
- International firms tend to offer standardised contracts, clearer insurance, and a credit-card hold rather than a large cash deposit. They are often pricier, and may require a credit card.
- Local agencies can be cheaper and more flexible, and many accept a cash deposit. They also vary far more — in insurance cover, in contract clarity, and in how a dispute on return is handled.
Whichever you choose, judge it on the same three things: the deposit and how it is held, exactly what the insurance covers and what the excess is, and whether the contract is clear and given to you to keep.
Before you rent a car
Check your licence covers you. To drive legally you need a licence valid for cars — a Thai licence, or your home licence with an International Driving Permit.
Pin down the insurance and the excess in writing — what is covered, and what you would pay in a claim.
Photograph and video the car — every panel, the wheels, the interior — before you drive off, exactly as you would a scooter.
Agree the deposit and fuel policy in writing, and never leave your physical passport as security.
