Renting a car in Pattaya without a credit card
Paying a booking with cash or debit does not settle the security required at pickup. Compare dated operator terms, then obtain a written answer for your car and dates.

Why one operator may require a credit card
A credit card can reserve available credit through a pre-authorisation. That security requirement is separate from how a website takes payment. The Avis Thailand example below makes the distinction explicit; it is not a Pattaya-wide rule.

DriveMe Pattaya and Drive Car Rental are different operators. The Drive Car Rental record, checked 8 September 2026, preserves a conflict: national terms require the main driver’s credit card and exclude cash/debit, while branch wording refers to cash at unspecified locations. Do not transfer DriveMe’s earlier terms to Drive.
Cash, debit and card holds are different
A cash deposit transfers money to the operator. A debit-card transaction may be a charge rather than a reversible pre-authorisation. A credit-card hold reserves available credit. Ask the operator to identify which mechanism it will use, the exact amount, when release or repayment occurs, and what document proves it. Do not assume that “card accepted” means a debit card can satisfy the security requirement.
How much cash to budget
Use the operator’s complete quote: rental and required charges still unpaid, plus cash security if required. A card hold instead needs available credit and should be recorded separately. Include any stated card-payment surcharge in the rental cost; do not assume it also applies to a hold. Check the figures with the quote calculator and read the deposit guide.
Where to find cash-deposit agencies
Start with the dated records above or the car directory, then ask for one written reply before booking:
I want to hire [car/class] from [date/time] to [date/time] at [branch/address]. I do not have a credit card. Can I pay the rental and provide security using [cash/debit]? Please state the separate rental total, any payment surcharge, security amount and method, required cardholder name, documents and refund/release procedure. Does this confirmation apply to this exact booking?
Keeping a cash deposit documented
Agree the figure and return terms in writing on the contract, including the conditions and timing for repayment.
Get a receipt that separates the cash security from the rental fee, and keep a copy.
Record the handover by counting the cash and preserving the operator’s written acknowledgement.
Avoid surrendering the physical passport as security. Ask what documented alternative arrangement the operator accepts.
Record the car’s condition at pickup so later damage can be compared with a dated handover file.
Payment method does not answer the insurance question
Cash, debit or credit-card security does not establish what is insured or what excess applies. Confirm those items from the rental agreement and protection terms — see the car rental insurance guide.

The amount, return conditions, receipt and pickup evidence matter if a later charge is disputed.
