Pattaya’s four rental scams — and how to beat them
Vehicle-rental scams are the most common thing that goes wrong for tourists in Pattaya. They are also almost entirely avoidable. Here is how each one works.
The deposit scam
Inflated deposits, vague terms, and “fees” that only appear at the end. Know the normal amount before you hand over a single baht.
How to beat it Scam 02The fake-damage scam
A shop claims you caused scratches that were already there, then keeps your deposit. Photos and video on pickup defeat it completely.
How to beat it Scam 03The passport-hostage scam
Your passport held until you pay whatever is demanded. Never leave it — a cash deposit, or a copy plus cash, is enough.
How to beat it Scam 04The pre-existing-damage scam
Old damage written onto your contract as new. Read every line, and check the bike against it, before you sign anything.
How to beat itHonest reviews, earned the hard way
Pattaya Vehicle Rentals is an editorial publication, not a booking site. We make no money from the shops we cover — and we never will.
We rent anonymously
The editors rent as ordinary customers. Shops never know they are being reviewed, so what we document is exactly what you would get.
We pay full price
Every rental is paid in full at the real rate. We never accept a free or discounted bike, a sponsorship, or an affiliate deal.
We verdict the experience
Our recommend, OK or avoid verdict covers the deposit, contract, passport policy, insurance clarity and damage-claim fairness — never the machine itself.
We publish the facts
We report what happened on the rental and what it cost, with a last-verified date. We do not print unprovable accusations.
The verdict scale
Fair deposit and terms, clear contract, honest on return.
Workable, with specific caveats worth knowing first.
Documented problems with the rental experience.
Find a rental shop you can trust
Browse honest shops by what you are renting and where you are staying. The directory is being built one anonymous rental at a time.
Scooters & motorbikes
Automatic scooters, 125cc and up, and larger bikes.
Cars & pick-ups
Local agencies and international firms, compared fairly.
Or start with your area
The slow, honest way. We do not list a shop until the editors have rented from it anonymously and paid the bill. The first verdicts publish soon — until then, the guides below will get you renting safely today.

Read the guideMost visitors ride Pattaya illegally — without knowing it
To ride a scooter legally in Thailand you need a motorcycle licence and, as a tourist, an International Driving Permit covering motorcycles.
