Car rental excess in Pattaya
An excess is meaningful only when tied to a named product, covered event, exclusion set and claim. Here is how to verify the figure before pickup.
On this page
An excess is the amount a contract may leave with the renter for a covered claim; it is not necessarily a universal cap for excluded damage, multiple events or other charges. Ask “for this exact event, what could I pay and why?” Get the figure, trigger, exclusions and claim process in writing. Compare any card hold separately and use the insurance guide plus the pickup checklist.
What the excess actually is
Do not infer the protection attached to a rental from a headline such as “insured” or from the vehicle type. The operator should identify the insurer or waiver provider, relevant policy or contract wording, covered drivers and events, exclusions, limits and reporting process. Statutory vehicle cover, third-party liability, collision protection and a contractual waiver are different layers.
The excess or deductible is an amount the policy or waiver may assign to the renter for a covered claim. It does not automatically apply to glass, tyres, interior, underbody, theft, loss of use or another category; those facts come from the exact wording. Nor does one excess necessarily cover several separate incidents. Ask the provider to map the number to concrete examples on the document.
Hypothetical example: an excess is not the deposit
Invented figures, not an operator quote or a claim assessment. Assume one covered collision causes 12,000 baht of accepted damage and the agreement limits the renter’s share of that event to an 8,000-baht excess. Under those assumptions the share is 8,000 baht, not the full 12,000 baht.
Now assume a 5,000-baht cash deposit is already held. If that deposit is applied to the same agreed 8,000-baht liability, the remaining amount is 3,000 baht — not another 8,000 baht. Keep the deduction and balance on one itemised statement. A card hold is an authorisation, so establish what was actually charged before counting it as payment.
An excluded glass claim or a second incident cannot be calculated from this example. Its terms may differ. For a real claim, establish coverage and the accepted loss first; neither the deposit nor the advertised excess answers every loss.
There is no defensible Pattaya-wide excess amount
The figure can vary by operator, vehicle, dates, driver, sales channel, protection product and event. An old quote or a different vehicle class cannot establish your exposure. Collect the current schedule or contract for the exact booking and ask:
- Which event triggers this figure? Collision, theft, glass and third-party claims may not share one amount.
- Is it per incident, per damaged part or per rental? Do not assume a single cap.
- Which exclusions sit outside the figure? Ask about tyres, wheels, glass, roof, underbody, interior, keys, misuse and unauthorised drivers.
- What evidence and notice are required? Record reporting deadlines, police-document requirements and approved repair process.
Compare the payable rental total and the exposure described by the same current documents. Save the pages and any clarification before the hold is taken; a note typed only by the renter is weaker than an operator reply or signed addendum.

CDW and SCDW — what they change
Rental agencies use overlapping names; always read the Thai/English contract clause, not only the sticker on the desk.
CDW (collision damage waiver)
“CDW” is a product label, not a complete statement of cover. It may reduce contractual responsibility for defined collision damage and may leave an excess, but the exact effect comes from the agreement. Read the protected vehicle parts, exclusions, authorised-driver and road-use rules, claim notice and maximum responsibility. Do not state that an exclusion creates full liability without reading the related damage and consumer-contract terms.
SCDW / super CDW / excess reduction
“SCDW,” “super CDW,” “full cover” and “zero excess” are not guaranteed to mean the same thing. Ask for the product document and compare the before-and-after excess for each event, remaining exclusions, daily or total product price and whether taxes are included. A zero for one covered collision category does not establish zero exposure for glass, tyres, keys, towing or another excluded item.
Before you buy the agency’s upgrade, check whether your travel insurance or credit card already includes rental excess cover — conditions and caps apply, and you must confirm with the provider. See the insurance overview in car rental insurance in Pattaya.
Credit card hold vs cash deposit
An operator may request a credit-card pre-authorisation, cash security or another guarantee. The security amount is not automatically the excess and it is not itself proof that a later charge is valid:
Held amount — may match the excess, exceed it, or include fuel and toll buffers. Ask the exact blocked figure.
Release timing — ask the operator when it initiates release and your card issuer how long processing can take; these are separate timelines.
Damage charge — if the agency claims damage, they may capture part or all of the hold. Dispute unclear charges using our dispute a rental charge guide.
Cash deposit alternative — some local shops still take cash; read car rental deposit in Pattaya for how that interacts with return-day inspections.
Compare documents, not business labels
Neither an international brand nor a local agency label establishes the excess, clarity, price or claims practice for one booking. Sales channels and franchise locations can also supply different terms under a familiar name. Apply the same request to each candidate: current agreement, protection-product wording, security amount, exclusions, incident process and final payable total.
A real example of why the fields stay separate: the Budget Pattaya record, source-checked 8 September 2026, records a 5,000-baht branch card hold but national LDW excess bands of 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000 baht by group. Branch and national pages disagree about LDW inclusion. Those figures do not settle your rate, selected group or covered claim; obtain the branch’s written agreement. Read the firm versus local shop guide for the comparison method.
At pickup — build the record before the hold is taken
Pickup documentation can help resolve a later excess dispute. Run the car rental pickup checklist:
Photograph the contract excess clause
Every page that mentions liability, CDW, SCDW and exclusions.
Film the exterior and interior
Dated walk-around including wheels, glass, roof and mileage.
Note the hold on your receipt
Match the blocked amount to what staff said verbally.
After damage or a disputed charge
Police-report requirements vary by policy and incident. Photograph the scene and damage, exchange details where safe, notify the rental operator and insurer promptly, and follow their exact reporting instructions. Call 191 for an immediate police emergency, 1669 for a medical emergency, and use 1155 only for tourist assistance or translation.
If the agency bills you at or near the full excess and you disagree with the damage assessment, treat it as a contract dispute: compare the pickup photos, signed condition report, return record, written excess clause and itemisation. Those materials support fact-finding but do not establish intent or guarantee an outcome. See how to dispute a rental charge in Pattaya and the fake-damage guide for the documentation sequence.
Excess is one line in a longer contract
Deposit, fuel, territorial limits and liability caps all sit beside it.
