Foreign driving licence for scooter rental in Pattaya

Foreign renters often ask whether a UK, Australian or US car licence is enough. It is not enough to obtain an IDP: the domestic licence must already include the motorcycle entitlement represented by that permit. Thailand’s Government Public Relations Department identifies valid Thai licences, valid IDPs and ASEAN licences as recognised branches in its guidance for foreign drivers; the underlying category still has to match the vehicle.

The short answer

A car-only licence does not become a motorcycle licence because an IDP is issued or a rental counter accepts it. If the domestic licence lacks motorcycle entitlement, resolve the licensing question with the competent licensing authority before renting; an IDP cannot create a category the domestic licence does not contain.

At the counter

Confirm the specific operator’s identity checks and carry the original documents for the recognised motorcycle-licence branch you rely on, including an IDP where applicable. Carry the original licence route you rely on, the IDP where applicable, the rental document and a helmet. A phone photo is useful backup but should not be represented as a legal substitute for an original document. UK, EU, Australian and US licences

Renters often assume a car licence from home covers a 125 cc scooter. Do not rely on engine size or a shop’s willingness to rent. Where the IDP branch applies, obtain the permit from the authorised issuer before travel and carry it with the matching domestic licence; verify the applicable convention and category with that issuer and Thai authorities.

Shop copy vs police standard

A counter may record identity without resolving whether your licence is recognised for the vehicle. Its handover does not establish lawful riding or insurance cover. Responsibility after an incident depends on the applicable law, contract and policy; do not assume the shop’s conduct removes your own obligations.

Getting an IDP before travel

For the IDP branch, use the authorised issuer connected to your domestic licence before travel and confirm the category and convention.
