DLT conversion for long-stay renters

The official summary currently lists a passport, residence certificate, health certificate, foreign licence and approved e-learning certificate for foreign residents seeking conversion. It is an orientation page, not a personalised checklist; nationality, licence class and local-office procedure may affect the route.

For a scooter, confirm that the Thai card carries motorcycle entitlement rather than assuming a car licence covers both. Until a Thai licence is issued, verify whether another officially recognised route applies to you.

What to record for the rental transaction

A Thai licence does not determine the operator’s identity, deposit or contract policy. Before paying, ask the operator to record:

• Thai driving licence (motorcycle class) shown at pickup
• The operator’s stated identity check and copy-retention terms; keep the original passport.
• Any current contact or address evidence the operator says is required, with its purpose recorded
• The agreed security amount, currency, payment method and refund or release process.
• Vehicle condition, photographed or filmed by you before departure

Longer hire and repeat transactions

A Thai licence does not establish a monthly rate, preferred model, breakdown response or renewal method. For the exact dates and scooter, request a dated written quote that identifies the total price, deposit, mileage, territory, maintenance, replacement, extension, early-return and inspection terms. Compare complete like-for-like offers rather than assuming a repeat-customer benefit.

Treat each renewal or substitute scooter as a new evidence event: record the registration or fleet identifier, fuel level, controls, tyres, mirrors and existing marks, and obtain acknowledgement before riding. Checkpoints, insurance and visitors

Carry the valid licence, wear a helmet and keep the rental documents available. Thailand’s official helmet-law notice states that both riders and passengers must wear helmets.
