Replacement scooter when your rental breaks down
Fleet shops sometimes swap a dead bike mid-rental — get the swap in writing, film the replacement, and never accept blame for the first bike’s mechanical fault.
Film the fault with timestamp video before you call the shop. Fair fleet counters swap like-for-like at no extra fee and update the plate on your contract or LINE thread. Walk-around the replacement as if it were pickup day — new scratches on the swap bike are yours if you skip photos.
Pattaya fleet rentals run high mileage: dead batteries after short sits, flat tyres from slow leaks, worn drive belts on Pratumnak hills. Mid-rental breakdowns are common enough that decent shops have a backup row. The problem is not the swap — it is paperwork and blame on return day when staff claim you burned out the engine or hid crash damage.
The editors’ anonymous rentals as of May 2026 show two patterns. Honest shops pick up the bike or deliver a replacement, note the new plate, and do not charge engine fees for faults that existed before you rode. Weak shops delay the swap, leave you pushing an unsafe bike, then invoice mechanical damage on return — overlapping the fake-damage scam.
When to call the shop vs fix roadside
Some fixes are yours: a puncture you can plug after a nail — see flat tyre guide. Others are shop problems: battery that dies every morning — see dead battery; smoking exhaust; seized wheel; brake failure — see brake problems.
If riding further risks a crash, stop. Video the fault, odometer if visible, and location pin. Message the shop on LINE with the clip before you push the bike. That timestamp separates wear-and-tear from renter abuse later.
Getting the swap documented
Agree swap terms in writing
Same model class, no swap fee, return date unchanged or extended for downtime. LINE message from the shop account counts if paper is slow.
Update plate and diagram
New bike means new damage marks. Photograph the replacement contract line or amended form — see keep a contract copy.
Run pickup checklist again
Full walk-around video on the replacement before keys turn. See pickup checklist and photo evidence.
Do not sign engine fault admission
Decline notes that say you caused mechanical failure unless you truly did. Overheating from low oil on a poorly maintained fleet bike is not your rebuild bill.
Downtime and daily rate fairness
If you lose half a day waiting for a swap, ask for extended return time or a pro-rated credit. Shops that charge full daily rate while the bike sat dead in your condo parking test your patience — document messages showing when you reported the fault. For longer rentals see breakdown guide and extending a rental.
When the shop refuses to swap
Stop riding. Keep fault video. If they abandon you roadside, see Tourist Police disputes and disputing a charge. Return day may still arrive — use pickup and fault timestamps to block engine invoices. For immediate scam pressure see Been scammed?
Know fault vs renter damage before return
Replacement swaps only protect you if the first bike’s failure was documented. Read the broader breakdown guide next.
