Scratched your rental scooter in Pattaya — what now?
Preserve the pickup record, photograph the new mark, notify the operator promptly and compare any charge with the contract, affected part and itemised repair basis.
On this page
Photograph the mark promptly, preserve the original pickup walk-around and notify the operator in writing. At return, compare the claimed damage with the baseline, signed excess and an itemised repair method. If the mark is visible at pickup, show the matching frame before accepting responsibility.
A scratch can involve two separate questions: whether the mark occurred during your rental, and what repair is reasonably connected to it under the agreement. This guide separates a documented new scuff from an unsupported claim about pre-existing damage. It does not publish a citywide repair-price range because the affected part, finish, labour, replacement method and contract terms all matter.
Read alongside photographing your scooter, pre-existing damage scam, rim damage, car scratch claims (for renters comparing car hire), damage charges, and return day.
Minor scratch vs damage that changes the bill
Record the affected area without diagnosing the scooter’s roadworthiness from appearance. If an incident may have affected a wheel, control, light, structural part or another operating function, request qualified inspection before riding. For a charge, ask what actual work is proposed and how its cost relates to the documented damage.
Renters often confuse scratches with rim curb damage or mirror cracks. Photograph the exact panel or part; wide shots help context, close-ups help compare to pickup video.
What to do the day you scratch it
Prompt action creates a clearer timeline:
- Move the bike somewhere safe and photograph the scratch in daylight — multiple angles, with the plate visible in at least one frame.
- Message the shop on the same channel you used for booking (LINE, WhatsApp) with photos and a short factual note — no long story required.
- Ask whether they want you to visit the shop or continue riding until return.
- Keep copies of messages and photos in cloud storage separate from the phone you might lose.
A dated message does not decide liability, but it records when you disclosed the mark and what the operator instructed. Keep the complete thread rather than a cropped screenshot.
Use pickup and return records to compare condition
Your pickup walk-around video provides the comparison baseline when a later mark is disputed. Film slowly at pickup: every panel, both sides, seat, mirrors, exhaust, wheels, odometer and supplied accessories. Retain the original file and metadata rather than relying only on a compressed chat upload.
On return, align the pickup and return views of the same panel. If the mark is new, ask how the proposed work and amount relate to it; if it is visible at pickup, show that evidence before acknowledging the charge. Full mechanics are in pre-existing damage claims and unsupported damage claims. Car renters can use the car rental scratch guide for the same evidence comparison.
Minor scratch return claims and fair quotes
There is no reliable citywide price for a scooter scratch. Ask the operator to identify the exact panel or part, whether the proposal is cleaning, refinishing, repair or replacement, the labour, tax and any loss-of-use clause. Compare that itemisation with the damage terms and excess in the signed agreement. A handwritten amount is not automatically wrong, but it should still identify what you are paying for and result in a receipt.
Questions to raise before accepting a minor scratch return claim:
- Does the proposed repair method match the depth and location of the recorded mark?
- Does the itemisation name the part, labour, tax and any separate contract charge?
- Is every claimed mark compared with the original pickup record?
- Will the operator provide a final receipt and record the remaining security balance?
See damage charges and disputing a charge. If the shop invents damage entirely, escalate using scam guide patterns and been scammed? steps when appropriate.
Return day with a known scratch
Arrive in daylight with your message trail and videos ready. Point out the scratch before staff do. Ask for joint inspection and agree whether you pay a quoted amount or deduct from deposit. Do not sign a blank damage form. Follow return day playbook for deposit timing and witnesses.
If you also curbed a wheel, ask for any wheel-related work to be separately itemised — see rim damage guide. Scratches and rim damage together are still not an excuse for passport hostage or invented panels.
Compare the same panel at pickup and return
The original pickup file and prompt incident photos create the baseline. Use the dedicated guide when a claimed mark is already visible in that record.
