How to get your scooter rental deposit back in Pattaya
Close the inspection with staff, preserve the signed terms and payment trail, and route an unresolved consumer-contract complaint to OCPB.
On this page
Close the inspection with staff and record what happens to the security: cash received, transfer completed, or the operator’s card-hold release action. Keep any disputed deduction in writing. The bank showing available credit again is a separate check from the operator initiating release.
The short answer
- Return at the agreed time and place, with the fuel and accessories required by the contract.
- Inspect the bike together and record the agreed result or each disputed item.
- Use the payment-method checklist to document repayment or release, then keep the closure record.
What you need from pickup day
Start this evidence file at pickup and add the return records as they become available:
- Agreement: named operator and branch, registration, rental dates, security amount and deduction/release terms. Keep a complete contract copy.
- Payment: the amount, currency, method and transaction or receipt reference, with rent and security separate. See the receipt checklist.
- Condition: signed pickup notes and original photos/video, then return photos showing fuel, accessories and any disputed mark.
- Inspection: return time, place, staff acknowledgement and any written itemisation or messages about a deduction.
- Closure: cash receipt, completed transfer or operator release reference; note any amount still outstanding and the next contact agreed.
Keep the original files, not only a compressed message copy. These records support assessment of a dispute but do not guarantee repayment. The deposit guide separates security from rental cost and excess.
Return on time, in agreed condition
The deposit exists to cover damage, late return or contract breach. Meet the return deadline written on your contract — not a verbal estimate from pickup. Meet the signed fuel and equipment-return terms, using the pickup condition record as the comparison. The pickup checklist applies in reverse at return: walk around the bike together, point out anything the shop flags, and do not sign anything you disagree with. Full sequence in return day playbook.
Record the refund or hold release
- Cash returned
- Count the amount and currency with staff. Obtain a receipt or written acknowledgement stating how much was returned and any amount deducted or still disputed.
- Bank or PromptPay transfer
- Match the received amount and destination account to the agreement. Save the completed transfer details and reference; a pending screen is not proof of receipt. See the PromptPay refund guide.
- Card pre-authorisation
- Ask the operator for written confirmation of its release action, amount and transaction reference. Keep that record and check the remaining hold with your card issuer. Operator release and the issuer restoring available credit need not appear at the same moment; no fixed processing period is established here.
A video or screenshot can supplement these records where lawful and respectful of others’ privacy. It does not replace the receipt, transaction evidence or written inspection result.
Match a proposed deposit deduction or damage claim to the signed terms and evidence before agreeing to it.
If the shop withholds your deposit
Stay calm and ask for a written breakdown of any deduction. Keep your contract, receipt, pickup photos and return photos. If the shop claims damage you did not cause, refer to the pre-existing notes on your contract and the pickup photographs. Do not surrender your passport or agree to an open-ended “inspection” that delays return of your cash — see passport hostage.
Lost receipt? Contract photos and payment records may still help document the deposit — see the lost receipt guide. A disputed partial refund after a damage claim calls for the same contract and condition record — see disputing a charge.
If the operator will not resolve a withholding you dispute, contact OCPB on 1166 or use complaint.ocpb.go.th. The complaint system asks for supporting documents and issues a reference number for tracking. Use 1155 only for tourist assistance or translation. Document the operator, branch, contract, payment and amount in dispute. This is editorial orientation, not legal advice.
