Wrong scooter model at pickup in Pattaya
Shops substitute models when stock runs low — if you paid for an NMAX or PCX, a smaller Wave without a price cut is a contract problem, not a favour.
The bike on the contract must match the frame you ride away. If staff push a downgrade at the same daily rate, renegotiate the price or walk. Film the actual model and plate against the contract line before you pay — that video wins return-day disputes when staff claim you rented a different bike.
You book a Yamaha NMAX on WhatsApp, arrive in Jomtien, and the forecourt rolls out a Honda Wave. Or you asked for automatic and staff point at a semi-automatic with a heel brake. Pattaya rental counters swap stock constantly during high season — Songkran, December, weekend bar traffic. Most swaps are innocent logistics. Some are quiet downgrades: smaller engine, older fleet bike, same quoted price.
The editors’ anonymous rentals as of May 2026 show a pattern: fair shops amend the contract before you pay — new model line, plate number, adjusted rate if the class drops. Problem shops treat the substitute as “same same” and rush you to sign. That becomes a pre-existing damage trap on return if the wrong bike already had unmarked scratches, or a deposit fight if staff later deny which frame you took.
Why model swaps happen in Pattaya
Fleet turnover is high. A booked Click may still be out on a weekly rental; the shop offers another 110 cc automatic from the row. That is normal if you agree. What is not normal is charging NMAX money for a base automatic, or handing you a manual bike when you cannot ride one — see automatic vs manual and the model pages for NMAX, Click, and PCX expectations.
Hills matter. Pratumnak and the Naklua headland punish underpowered 110 cc bikes with two riders. If your substitute cannot handle your daily route, that is a functional downgrade even when staff call it equivalent.
What to do at the counter before you pay
Compare frame to quote
Read the badge on the plastic fairing. Match it to your message thread. If it differs, stop before cash or card changes hands.
Renegotiate or refuse
Ask for the booked model, a fair lower daily rate, or walk. Rental sois in Central Pattaya and Jomtien exist for comparison — see choosing a shop.
Fix the contract line
Model, plate or fleet number, deposit, return time, and rate must reflect the actual bike. See reading the contract and keeping a photo copy.
Film the handover
Video the bike badge, plate, and contract model field in one clip. Run the full pickup checklist walk-around on this frame, not the one you imagined booking.
Downgrades, upgrades, and price fairness
A fair downgrade lowers the daily rate — often 50–100 baht on fleet automatics, more if you lose ABS or storage on premium models. An upgrade at the same price is fine if you wanted the bigger bike anyway. Document it.
Deposits should match the bike class too. A shop demanding 8,000 baht on a Wave after quoting an NMAX is a mismatch signal — see high deposit red flags and normal deposit bands. Prices and deposits change without notice; verify at the counter.
Return day when the wrong model was never fixed
If you already rode away on a mismatched contract, your pickup video and contract photos are the defence. Show the frame you actually took. If staff claim damage on a bike ID you never held, that overlaps with fake damage claims. Stay calm, open your gallery, and follow return day filming before inspection.
Run the full checklist on the bike you actually receive
Model swaps are where pre-existing damage gets blamed on tourists. The checklist covers photos, contract fields, and the walk-around before keys turn.
